Scary ER Trip

About 2 or 3 days after we got home from the hospital with Noah, I woke up at 4:30am with excruciating pain in my abdomen. Worse than labor. I thought I was bleeding out internally and going to die or something. My mom rushed me to the ER and Jeremy and the baby followed. They did blood work, ultrasounds and a CT scan and couldn't figure it out. They admitted me and started IV antibiotics and pain medication. They even scheduled my hysterectomy for that night. Then the pain slowly decreased and they decided it must have been endometritis (not endometriosis and we have no idea why it happened except maybe because immunosuppression due to Lupus). We spent another 3 days in the hospital while on IV antibiotics and a lot of Loritab before coming home on Keflex for 2 weeks. Spending 24 hours away from Noah (I didn't want him around all the hospital germs) and being in extreme pain in the ER and back up in L&D made for the worst day of my life. Next time I am getting some stronger antibiotics at delivery to prevent all of this from happening again!

2 week check-up

Noah went to visit Dr. Kala (Sigler) again today. He weighed 8lbs 4oz! That is a gain of 20oz in 9 days and up a pound from birth. That is unheard of. We may have a pro football player on our hands! We decided to start Zantac for the reflux he has been having and will keep a watch on his goopy eye that appears to have a clogged lacrimal duct. And we made it out without a melt down or peeing on anything or anyone!

We even managed to take a cake from La Baguette to Dr. Houk and his nurses, run in HR to full out benefit paperwork and in storkland to spend the rest of a gift card. We were productive today for once b/c Mommy has 5 times more energy now than when she was pregnant.

Newborn Photos

Today we went and had Noah's newborn photos taken with April Jackson, a professional photographer here in Edmond that specializes in newborns and kids. She was great! She spent 3 hours with us and didn"t even bat an eye when Noah peed and pooped all over Jeremy, her bench, and the floor. She showed us some good tricks to get babies to fall asleep. We can't wait to see the proofs.

Grandma Z

We were so glad that Grandma Z (Zandra- Jeremy's Mom) could come to visit for a few days and see Noah and our new house.

D-Day

D-Day (as in Delivery Day;)

We arrived at L&D at 8:30pm on the the 2nd as instructed. Just in time to get the last room with a decent view. They started an IV and gave me cytotec to help start things off, but no change except that I started contracting every 2-3 minutes instead of every 4 minutes like I had been doing for months. In the middle of the night they gave me another round of cytotec, but still no change. At 7:30am Dr. Houk came in and broke my water and told Tonja (our sweet nurse) to start the Pitocin even though I had not made any progress on the cytotec. All the soon-to-be grandparents were put on alert that this baby would be here within the next 24 hours even if it meant a C-section. Mimi and Papa were in our room in no time.

I wanted to be dilated to at least a 4 if not a 5 before starting my epidural, but after things drug along all morning at a 3 maybe a 4 all morning, I was grabing the bedrails with discomfort, and being a little crabby towards Jeremy, Tonja decided it was time to call in the anesthesiologist. When the anesthesiologist appeared in my room he had some young male student with him. He began explaining the procedure and that the student would assist. I just nodded and told them to hurry and get it done. Before I knew it I was having a contraction, told to be perfectly still and to relax (both of which are extremely hard to do during a contraction), the blood pressure cuff was squeezing the daylights out of my arm, and this student was sticking a giant needle into my spine and asking questions that revealed that he had never done an epidural before and really didn't know what he was doing. Suddenly I was ripping at the blood pressure cuff and seeing visions of myself as a paraplegic! I was relieved a few minutes later to find the epidural actually working despite my doubts.

Soon after my epidural the baby began having decellerations in his heart rate and I was contracting every 1-2 minutes, but the contractions were not making any progress. Tonja and Dr. Houk decided to stop the Pitocin. They planned to give me a Brethine shot to stop all contractions and start everything all over again with cytotec and then pitocin. It looked like it was going to be a long day. Tonja predicted that Noah would arrive before midnight, but definitely not before 7pm. 30minutes after stopping the pitocin and dilated to a 4, Tonja said I was a 7. Only 2 minutes later, I then sat up in bed to get more comfortable and told Tonja that something didn't feel right and I was feeling a lot of pressure. She told me that I was okay several times and that I was only a 7, but that she would get the anesthesiologist to give me a bolus on my epidural. I told her again that I felt a lot of pressure. She looked and was shocked to find Noah ready to enter the world. Tonja ran out into the hall and told Jeremy and Mom to quickly finish the sandwiches they were eating and to get into the room.

Before I knew it I was pushing, but I had to wait through several contractions until Dr. Houk (who got stuck in the hospital elevators) to arrive. After 4 pushes Noah James entered the world at 3:09pm at 7lbs 4oz 21inches long and a 14in head circumference (just as the proud new Papa burst into the delivery room because he was accidently paged a little too early). He had nuchal cord x1, but still had apgars of 9 and 9 and was beautiful.

Leading up to the Big Day

Wow! It has been a crazy and in some ways very long month. Sorry to all of you that have been patiently waiting for the details of the month and Noah's arrival. Every day my goals are to get a shower and to update the blog. The first one usually gets done. The second goal obviously has not until today. I have been told that many moms can relate.

As you know I was doing NSTs (non-stress tests) twice a week all through November. Noah's heart rate always looked wonderful on the monitors, but I was still contracting every 3-5 minutes continually even while taking two medications to stop contractions around the clock. I was not dilating so the doctors were fine with me continuing to contract, however just before Thanksgiving my blood pressure began to rise. Jeremy and I wondered if this baby was going to have a November or December birthday. I had an appointment on November 30th with Dr. Houk (OB) and he decided considering my contractions, eratic blood pressure, neurologic signs that I was becoming pre-eclamptic, and that I was dilated to a 2 and 60% effaced he would induce me starting the night of Dec. 2nd. That way Noah would arrive on the 3rd when he was 38 weeks.

On Dec. 1st I finished throwing a few last minute items in our hospital bag and Mom and I went shopping at the Market to burn off some nervous energy and to kill time waiting for Noah (or to throw me into labor naturally with all the walking). On the 2nd I met Mom and Kelly for a wonderful lunch at Inspirations Tea Room. Then Mom and I were off to get pedicures. After pedicures I got my hair cut. I had to get in some mommy time before all time and money to spend on myself is gone, right!?

Update

Not much has changed from my last post. We are quickly approaching 36 weeks. I am still contracting like crazy and taking the medications diligently although they don't seem to help. My hands, feet, and ankles have begun to swell more and more every day. Jeremy had to help me take off my wedding ring today. It took a lot of painful tugging and lotion. I am enjoying my lightened work schedule. Our last childbirth class is Tuesday and we had our last shower today with the flock. I am washing all the baby's clothes, bibs, and blankets as I write. Hopefully I will get them all folded and put away tonight or tomorrow and get the nursery tidied up. After a lot of praying and debate I got my H1N1 shot last week. I feel at peace with the decision. Jeremy has promised me a few date nights before the baby gets here and I plan on holding him to it. Well, I should get back to the laundry.

NSTs and working less

I had another NST on Friday at 8am after working all night. I was contracting once every 4minutes with the Procardia and brethine on-board. I was sent home to sleep and take more meds although I did drop in to Employee Health before heading home to see if they had any H1N1 shots. Miraculously they had vaccinations but only for pregnant employees and those working on the mother and baby floor. I met both criteria! So after much prayer and anxiety the last few weeks I got my shot.
On Saturday I finally petitioned my manager to let me cut back on my work hours just enough to help me get this baby to full term. So now I will be working 1-2 12 hour shifts and 1-2 8 hour shifts a week. All nights.

A long day of taking care of baby and mommy

I went in to Baptist for my first Non-stress test (NST) today. Our appointment was at 2pm. It was 2:55pm when we were finally taken back to begin the test. After hooking me up to the monitors the L&D nurses were shocked to see that I had 6 contractions within the 20 minute test. I nonchalantly said, "I know. I have been doing this for 6 or 7 weeks." I also told them that I have been taking scheduled Procardia and Terbutaline for the contractions. Our nurse quickly got on the phone to Dr. Houk. Dr. Houk wanted me checked to make sure I wasn't dilating, to take another Terb and go to bed. But I had a appointment with Dr. Mirabile at 4:20pm and then Childbirth class at 7pm. Mirabile could check me there. It is 10 times more painful to have the mean L&D nurses check you than the doctors, believe it or not. So off we went to my appointment with Dr. Mirabile, and by we I mean Mom and I. She volunteered to accompany me to my appointments since Jeremy was at work and I guess she enjoys sitting in doctor's offices for long periods of time.
We arrived at Dr. Mirabile's office at 4pm and waited until 5:15pm to be taken back for the ultrasound. Jeremy thought he was going to miss the appointment due to not getting off work until 4:30pm, but since we waited so long he was able to be there for the whole thing. While climbing up onto the table I had a contraction. I paused and had to breathe through it. The tech asked if I was okay and I told her I was having a contractions. She quickly rushed out of the room to tell the doctor and the drama began all over again.
Dr. Mirabile came in with a resident and said "I hear there is some excitement in here- ha, ha" and flashed a cheesy smile.
Long story short, the baby was reacting fine with accelerations on the NST, looked good on the ultrasound and is head down(they estimate that he is 5lbs 3oz), I am 60% effaced, not dilated, and they performed another fetal fibronectin test (FFN) and it was negative. So we only have a 3% chance that the baby will come in the next 2 weeks, but he is getting ready. All these contractions are just a big annoyance to mommy and baby. We now have to do NSTs twice a week. My mom also got to experience how much fun the last 8months of waiting all day in doctor's offices on a weekly basis has been.
By the time we got out of the appointment with Dr. Mirabile it was after 6pm. Although it is nothing like waiting 2hours 40minutes for Dr. Merrill, my rheumatologist, it was making for a long afternoon. We rushed to Panera for a sandwich. My mom drove the accord back to our house and Jeremy and I ran back to Baptist for our first Childbirth class. Personaly I found the class to be a snooze and a repeat of nursing school OB class, but Jeremy learned a lot and was diligently taking notes:)

The Family Car

Today Jeremy and I went and traded in the Montero for a new vehicle. Both of our cars are getting older, very high in mileage, and not as safe for our little man as we would like. Jeremy was a little sad to see the Montero go. He was comfortable with its quirks including a hole in the gas tank (you could only fill it up to 1/2-3/4 full otherwise the liquid gold would spill out all over town and you definitely couldn't park it on a hill), only 1/2 of the right rear fender flare, severe hail damage, fading paint, one broken cup holder, the driver's side window whistled above 50mph, and the driver's side door never locked. I could go on and on, but I think you get my point.
Jeremy, being the car guy that he is has researched this purchase for probably over a year. It came down to either a Honda Pilot or a Toyota Highlander. We were very happy when we drove away in our new gray Honda Pilot with leather, only 39,000 miles, lots of safety features for little man, and no odd quirks. As soon as we pulled out on the highway we both looked at each other with huge grins. It was so quiet. We could actually carry on a conversation while in the car. The Montero had so much road noise that we could never talk to each other while in the car without one of us getting crabby and frustrated that we had to yell. Jeremy said "I think I could whisper and you could hear me". I said, "I think you are right".
So yes, we are in love with our new Pilot and Jeremy is learning to like driving the Accord. It only makes sense that the person with the shorter commute and that will be hauling little man around more would drive the bigger vehicle, whether it is newer or not, right.

And the contractions go on and on and on

We have now made it to 33 weeks! Only 7 more weeks left at the most. Jeremy and I are both getting very anxious and excited for the baby to be here. The nursery is completely ready except for hanging a couple of shelves and getting the letters that spell his name put up. Jeremy has put a lot of sweat into the nursery for which I am very grateful. I think we have all the basics covered in case (heaven forbid) the baby comes tomorrow. I am also excited for the showers I have coming up in the next couple of weeks- one with the girls at work and one with the ladies from HHBC. Bless them all; they have barely gotten to know us and they already want to celebrate our miracle with us.
On another note, I have been feeling pretty good lately and all my lab work, blood pressure, etc have been normal for which I am very thankful. My only complaints are the back pain that comes with being 8 months pregnant and constant Braxton Hicks contractions. Often I have 10-20 contractions an hour. Dr. Houk put me on procardia daily and terbutaline as needed to decrease the contractions. As a result of the contractions I have not been getting much sleep lately and my joint pain has flaired up. Dr. Houk also recommended that I keep a consistent scheudule of sleeping during the day and being awake at night. Hence I may not answer your calls/texts immediately during the day and more and more of my posts may be at 3am. Anyhow, I am just thankful that I am not dilating and that the baby has been tolerating the constant squeezes well. I remind myself often that all of this will be well worth it once I can hold our little man in my arms.
Please pray for energy and strength to get through the three shifts that I have in a row starting tomorrow night and that the non-stress test I am supposed to do early next week goes well.

The weekend

It is Monday morning and back to the grind, sort of. I guess I don't work again until Thursday night, but we have an appointment with Dr. Houk this morning, Jeremy has to work from 3pm to close, and I have Bible study tonight. I worked on Friday night. Saturday morning Jeremy went to a career seminar at HHBC while I caught some z's. Saturday afternoon we watched some football and we are slightly disappointed in our Jayhawks' performance.
Sunday we enjoyed church and going to flock. Then it was to my parents' house for burgers and pumpkin cookie baking. Mom and I baked several dozen pumpkin cookies for the guys Dad works with, my Bible study, a flock pumpkin carving party, and us. We had pumpkin cookies coming out our ears.
After watching a little more football and a short nap Jeremy grabbed the pumpkin from the front porch and we headed to the pumpkin carving party. Jeremy carved a nice turkey in our pumpkin while I chatted with the girls (hand me a carving knife and you might as well warm up the car for a trip to the ER because I will probably lose a finger). It was pretty funny to see the porch lined with turkeys, ghosts, The Office characters, crosses, and collegiate logos once everyone had finished carving their pumpkins.
After the party Jeremy and I had a few quiet hours of talking at home. We both cherish the quiet moments in our new home because we know that the quiet moments will soon be few and far between. I am really looking forward to my birthday dinner on Tuesday and a massage and shopping on Wednesday with Mom.

I received a call from Dr. Houk's nurse Christine today. I don't have gestational diabetes. Praise God!

Glucose Tolerance Test

As soon as Dr. Houk found out about our little trip to L&D he wanted to see me in his office yesterday. I still was not dilated and he put me on Procardia in addition to the Terbutaline to help stop the contractions. So far the Procardia is working as long as I take it regularly.
This morning I went in to have my glucose tolerance test (gtt) done after following a special diet for 3 days and fasting for 12 hours. For anyone that is not familiar with gtt's, they draw your fasting serum glucose level then make you drink 100 grams of sugar in a 4 oz drink within 3 minutes and then draw your serum glucose level every hour for 3 hours. Meanwhile you try to cure your boredom by reading really pointless magazines in the hard lab waiting room chairs and can not eat or drink anything. Drinking that much sugar and in that little amount of time on an empty stomach makes you have the worst belly ache and want to vomit. For two and a half hours I felt terrible and it was all I could do to hold it down because I did not want to go through this again. With lots of prayer I got through it and now we wait to find out whether I have gestational diabetes or not.

Our first visit to L&D

We had another interesting weekend. I worked on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights (I refuse to work 3 shifts in row again until at least March, if ever). Friday morning I went home and slept for a few hours while Jeremy was at work, then I got up and cleaned and made a pot of chili. David came into town for a visit around 7pm.
Saturday the boys watched football, went car shopping, and planted some tulip bulbs for me. I have had several contractions a day for the last few weeks, but they were spuratic, sometimes 5 in an hour and sometimes I would go 5 hours without having one. Late Saturday night the boys put on a movie. My contractions started to pick up a little bit and it was late so I went to bed. I had 8 or 9 contractions over the next hour and a half. I tried all the tricks to get them to go away. Finally they slowed a little bit and I was able to fall asleep. I thought these were normal Braxton-Hicks contractions that everyone complains about. I woke up a few times during the night with them and really thought hard about waking Jeremy up and telling me had to go to the hospital or do something, but I didn't.
Sunday morning we got up and got ready for church. I had a few contractions while getting ready, a few on the way to small group, one or two during small group, and several while we ate lunch at Panera. I decided I better not run the errands that I had wanted to get done so we went home and I laid on the couch and in bed for a few hours. My contractions had increased in frequency and intensity and about 4:30pm I had had enough. I still thought that these must be the Braxton-Hicks contractions that everyone complains about. How was I going to live like this for the next 2 months. I didn't want to be the annoying first-time mom that is calling once a week, but I called because I didn't want the baby to be stressed and got the on-call doctor. Needless to say he was upset, said that this was not normal and that I was going to delivery this 31 weeker at home if I didn't get to the hospital immediately. So off we go to the hospital. I could tell that Jeremy was pretty nervous the whole way there because he was silent. Long story short, I was in pre-term labor, contracting once every three minutes with regularity and pretty high intensity, but I was not dilating. I got a shot of terbutaline, a fetal fibronectin test (fFN- predicts whether you will go in to labor within the next week or two) which was negative- praise God, and told to go home, keep well hydrated, take it easy, and take terbutaline to get the contractions to stop.
So that was our busy and scary weekend. I am taking it easy today, tomorrow I go to the lab for a three-hour glucose tolerance test which I have had to diet and fast for, and Wednesday night I am scheduled to work. Please pray that the contractions stop, I don't have to take the terbutaline every two hours (it makes me feel terrible), I don't get put on bedrest (we can't afford it), and that I pass the glucose tolerance test.

Two months to go!

Well, it is now October. Last weekend we went to our first Cowboys game with my parents and Ryan. We had a lot of fun tailgating. OSU football is very much a family affair and not so much about the drunk college kids which was nice. I could not bear to put my son in orange(or myself, loyalties aside I would have looked like a giant pumpkin) so I wore black. Come to find out, OSU was playing Grambling State whose colors are black and yellow. Oops!
This weekend Jeremy and I went out on a date to the movies on Friday after decorating letters for the nursery, painting a closet, and cooking dinner. Saturday we went to a few garage sales to try and find a changing table, then to the grocery store, and then we both went to work. Today it was rainy and cool, very much a fall day. We went to church, over to my parents' house for a bowl of soup, and then Jeremy went to work and I watched football with my dad and brother for a while. It was a productive and relaxing weekend.
Jeremy and I are trying to enjoy the time together (and the sleep) we have now, but the arrival of our little guy can't come soon enough. December seems so close and yet so far away. We had another appointment with Dr. Mirabile this week. Everything went well and we got to see Peanut on ultrasound again (pictures to come as soon as Jeremy can get them downloaded because we all know that I am technologically challenged). Praise God for a healthy baby and healthy mommy so far. We have another appointment with Dr. Houk on Wednesday. Hopefully we will get a more definite plan for delivery in place. We will also be doing another glucose tolerance test. Pray that this comes back normal and that he finds my swelling and contractions to all be a part of normal pregnancy as well.
We pretty much have the house ready for Peanut. The glider and ottoman for the nursery should arrive in the next week or two and we don't have anything up on the walls in the house, but we have made a lot of progress. Maybe Grandpa David can help Jeremy with one or two of the remaining projects when he comes to visit this next weekend.
I realized this week that I probably should get my Christmas shopping done pretty soon, at least before the baby arrives. But with the flu going around so bad I don't really want to leave the house except to go to work and doctor's appointments. I guess I will have to come up with some kind of solution to that dilemma.

Mid September Update

The Thompson household has been very busy the last few weeks. We are excited to say that we have moved into our new home and are finally putting down some roots. Jeremy has been very busy moving furniture, painting, and assembling baby items. I have been cleaning, picking out paint colors, unpacking boxes, and trying not to lift anything too heavy.
Mom and I traveled up to Kansas City this past weekend. I was really excited to see everyone. Friday night I got to meet my girlfriends from nursing school on the Plaza for dinner. It was good to catch up on everything that has happened this summer in KC. Nicole was gracious enough to let me run in Cheesecake factory afterwards to help me satisfy a craving for chocolate mousse cheesecake eventhough we rode together and she hates cheesecake and she had to work really early the next morning. Thanks Nicole!
Saturday we watched the OSU game on tv and then went out to Louisburg to celebrate Kaitlin's 18th birthday. I can't believe that Kaitlin is now an adult and my little brother will soon be too.
Sunday we went to my great-grandmother's for brunch. In the afternoon my grandmother hosted a shower for me and baby at her house. We played some fun shower games compliments of Madison and opened some great gifts. Once again I was glad to catch up with some OBC, college, and CMH friends that I hadn't seen since April. Jeremy's mom and Rachel were even able to come from Illinois. It was a fun afternoon except for the boys who were banned to the basement, but I don't think they minded so much because they got to watch the Chiefs game.
Today Jeremy and I both had the day off so we ran a few errands and then went to several furniture stores looking for a crib, dresser, glider, and ottoman. After searching three huge furniture stores we went into USA Baby and were overwhelmed by the selection and the number of items that we liked. We finally settled on an dark espresso convertible crib and dresser and a really comfy glider and ottoman in a soft taupe microfiber. The glider and ottoman will arrive in 4 weeks. The crib and dresser will be in in 4-8 weeks. If it takes 8 weeks we will be 35 weeks by then so it will be just in time.

Mid August Update

Wow! I didn't realize it had been so long since our last post. Life has been very busy around here the last few weeks. We went house hunting about a month ago. We saw 27 houses all around Edmond and Deer Creek in one day. The last two were our favorites, but we both really fell in love with one. We put in an offer to close on August 28th and we have been preparing to move again ever since.
We have had several doctors appointments since the last post. Baby and Mommy are both doing well besides the dizziness, lightheadedness, swelling, joint pain, and fatigue. We are very thankful that we have not had any major complications. We went through two or three weeks in which everyone asked us if we had felt the baby move yet and with disappointment we would reply "No". I couldn't wait for the day when I would feel him kick. And then all of sudden I can't get him to stop and he has his days and nights mixed up. Now when I am at work I am constantly distracted by someone kicking me in the bladder and when I try to sleep at night like a "normal" person I have someone punching me in the stomach.
Although, I might sound like I am complaining we are very grateful for every kick because it is a reminder that we are growing a healthy and active little boy.
Jeremy turned 26 yesterday. He is starting to realized that the big 3-0 is not too far away.
Check back soon for belly, house, and nursery pictures!!

It's A Boy!!

Yes, that's right. We went for another appointment today and found out we are having a little boy. We are so excited to start picking out things and decorating the nursery (at least in our minds for now- we will start house shopping by the end of the month). More importantly all of the labs and exams came back normal and he looked healthy on the ultrasound (we saw the kidneys this time too). Although Dr. Mirabile said he needed to gain some fat so he wouldn't look like an alien in the 4-D pics. I promise we will post the new ultrasound pics and some belly pics too real soon.

Our 3rd Ultrasound

This afternoon we had our second appointment with Dr. Mirabile and were praying that this one would go better than the last one. I had loads of fun with all the labs and the glucose tolerance test that they wanted done- not! I had to drink 12oz of a carbonated beverage that contained 50g of sugar and I had to do it within 4-5 minutes. It normally takes me hours to finish a can of Diet Coke. I have a lot more labs to do on Tuesday morning too. They wanted 20 tubes of blood total! The bright spot of the appointment was that we got to see the baby again. We were able to see a lot more this time too.
For my NICU friends following this, he went throught all major brain structures (hemispheres, ventricles, cerebellum, pons, thalamus, pituitary, etc.), spinal cord and all vertebrae present and intact, 4 chambered heart (echo to follow in a few weeks), intact diaphragm with stomach below, bladder in the pelvic cavity with good perfusion, 3 vessel cord, all extremity bones present and of appropriate length (femur, humerus, etc), 5 digit hands and feet, and eyes, nose, and palate all intact and in proper placement. The nuchal fold had shrunken significantly. More than likely it was at its peak last time since they are off on my dates. The baby was active, but a little less crazy than last time. Heart rate was in the mid 150s. We also got 4-D pics. The 20 week ultrasound we will be able to see the liver, spleen, and kidneys. I think that about covers it.

They have bumped my due date up again- by a week this time. So now we are looking at Dec. 8th. I have updated the ticker. We got back on July 1st. By then we will be far enough along that I can start hounding them for a definite answer on the sex of the baby.
*** We are taking bets on the babies weight, length, and DOB and any name suggestions (first and middle) that you might have***

1st Trimester Screening Results

This week Jeremy and I took a trip to Baltimore, northern Virginia, and then to Fredericksburg, Virginia for Sarrina and Mark's wedding. While we were on a boat tour of the National Harbor and Alexandria, Virginia my cell phone rang. I knew I wouldn't be able to hear anything over the boat engine so I let it go to voicemail. Once we got to dry land I listened to the voicemail. It was the doctor's office and they had some "lab results [they] wanted to discuss" with me. That is about the scariest voicemail you could leave on a mom's phone. You have to understand that I have had "lab results [they] wanted to discuss" before in my life and it hasn't been a good thing at all. Of course, Jeremy asked about the voicemail and once I told him he broke out into a sweat and was insisting that I call them back right away. After a few tries I got ahold of the nurse and she informed me that the first trimester screening was negative which means that the baby does not have Down syndrome or Edwards syndrome! Despite these results, I think we are still going to go through with the echo at this time just to be safe.

New Doctor

Today we had our first appointment with our doctor here in Oklahoma City. We got to see the baby via ultrasound again. The heart rate was in the 180's this time and he/she was very active. The ultrasound tech asked me to cough a couple of times to get a better look at things and when I did the baby would jump up like he/she was bouncing on a trampoline. It was very cute. They gave us their thoughts on what they thought the gender was, but we are going to wait a few more weeks to make certain before we will let you all know. We are 12 weeks along and it looks like we are still on track for a December 14th baby (sorry Corbin, I will try to make up a day in the next few weeks).

The doctor was concerned about one measurement that indicates an increased risk for genetic issues so he wants us to return on June 19th for another ultrasound, a glucose tolerance test, an Echocardiogram, and a couple of other tests. We also had a blood test run at this appointment to check for an increased risk of Down Syndrome and Edwards Syndrome. We are anxiously awaiting the results. Please pray that the baby's heart has formed as it should, that if there is anything amiss that the cardiologist will see it on the echo, and for the baby and I's general health.

On another note we were so excited and grateful to find out today that Jeremy will be able to transfer with Target down to OKC and he will start June 9th, the day after we return from vacation.

The Big Reveal

Today was Jeremy's graduation from the wonderful University of Kansas! We were very excited to share this big event with lots of family and friends, but we were also excited, nervous, and anxious to share the other big event in our lives with our families today. Some of you may ask why we would let the baby steal Jeremy's thunder after all his hard work. Well, we wanted to tell everyone together (when one of you is moving to another state that makes it difficult), we wanted to do it in person, and we wanted to tell both sides of the family at fairly close to the same time. Jeremy's graduation day was the only time in the anywhere near future that all those conditions could be met. It was Jeremy's idea to begin with and secretly I think he was more excited about the baby than graduating.

Just before Jeremy's semi-surprise party we pulled his parents and my parents outside and told them we had a little gift for each of them. Inside their black gift box tied with a ribbon they found onesies that read
Coming Soon
I Grandma
I Grandpa

I think the overall reaction could be described as shock. Regretfully we didn't have much time to talk about it because party guests were arriving and the food was not entirely ready so we headed back inside. The rest of the day was great. Jeremy looked so proud to be walking the hill and I was so excited for him and now we have no big secrets!

Making the Move

Wow! What a busy week! Thursday night was my last shift at Children's Mercy and I was super sad to leave, but am hopefully that we are moving on to bigger and better things and I continually trying to keep in mind that we are doing this for our new family.
I packed up the car while Jeremy was at work on Saturday and left town. Leaving without him was incredibly hard. I think I cried for half of the 5 hour drive to OKC.
I started work on Monday morning and by Wednesday I had begged my way on to the appointment books of a high-risk obstetrician here that is affiliated with Mercy Medical Center, but can deliver the baby at Integris Baptist where I work. Praise God! Our first appointment with Dr. Mirabile is May 29th. They will do a Level II Ultrasound at that time. Please pray continually for the health of the baby.

Our first appointment

Today we had our first appointment with the high-risk obstetrician Dr. Wickstrom at St. Lukes perinatology center. It was a lot of paperwork, answering questions and getting shuffled from room to room, but the very best part we got to do first which kept our spirits up.
The very first photo of Baby Thompson will be uploaded soon! The baby was measuring quite a bit smaller than it should for 9 weeks. So they said I was 6weeks and 4 days and adjusted my due date from November 29th to December 17th. Looks like we should have off work for Christmas! We could see that heart beating at 130bpm. The doctor said that the rate was good for six weeks, but the books we have say that 130bpm correlates with the middle of the seventh week. So all in all we have a little bit more clarity on the due date, but not much.
Dr. Wickstrom said that everything looked great with me and baby and that she did not anticipate any complications with my lupus.
And of course before we could leave the hospital they wanted a second UA for the day and more blood work. My veins are going to be completely scared over by the end of this pregnancy if they aren't already. Oh well, nothing I wouldn't pay for a healthy baby girl or boy.
And yes, Jeremy and I are beginning to work on names, but don't ask because we won't be telling anyone:)

More labs!

Today Dr. Latinis wanted more labs drawn STAT because I have been having some issues. I had called the doctor at St. Lukes perinatology on-call on Saturday and told him what was going on and he did not seem to terribly concerned and told me to just come in for my appointment on the 27th unless I was experiencing labor-like pain. But when I told Dr. Latinis on Tuesday he was concerned. Anyways, he drew another HCG level and I was excited to hear back that it was 14,984 so we are progressing well.

Confirmation

Well, I called Lorna (Dr. Latinis's nurse) this afternoon to hear how my labs turned out. Dr. Latinis looked at them and got on the phone to tell me that everything looked great. My SED rate (measures inflammation and Lupus activity) was elevated, but not high enough that he was worried and ...drum roll please...my HCG level was 1397. Which means we are definitely pregnant!!

Labs

Immediately after I got off work this morning I went to get some labs drawn that Dr. Latinis wanted- nothing but what he normally wants done every few months except for the pregnancy test and HCG levels of course. Three positive pregnancy tests on different days and at different times of the day can't possibly be a fluke, right?
I already felt the mother in me kicking in this morning. I did not question getting my labs done and having a giant needle dug in to my arm and the nasty bruise I will have for weeks again. Anything for my baby.
The phlebotimist (?spelling) says that the results should be back by tomorrow morning. Oh, she better be right because I will be calling in the morning!
I begged Lorna (Dr. Latinis's nurse) to call me tomorrow with the results instead of making me wait until my appointment with Dr. Wickstrom (obstetrician- 4/27/09) which I also made today. Being a higher risk pregnancy I thought that they would want to see me right away, so I was suprised when they said that they don't usually do the first prenatal appointment until you are nine to ten weeks (I am fairly certain that I am six weeks and two days along now). The nurse did say that the appointment would be three hours long (they should know everything about my entire life by the end of it) and that we will get the first pictures of our son or daughter via ultrasound at that time.
Making these appointments for the first time is somewhat nerve racking. It still feels surreal that I am expecting and weird to say "I am pregnant" out loud to someone on the other end of the line. It is something that I am really liking getting used to though.

And it was positive!

Lacey:
I rolled into KC today at 6pm and took a pregnancy test because I suspected something was up. And it was positive! I had just enough time to suprise Jeremy with it as he walked in the door after a long day at work, change my clothes, pack my lunch, and fly to work. Of course, I couldn't eat anything for dinner before I left because there were too many butterflies in my stomach. I am so excited, anxious, happy, and scared all at the same time.
Jeremy:
Today was a typical Friday at work, not much happened and it actually seemed to go by really fast. I think it was largely because I was going to see Lacey.
So, I got off a little early so I could see her before she left for work. She was looking amazing, as usual. I began making her a sandwich for her lunch for work when she told me that she had brought a suprise home with her from Edmond.
I really didn't know what to expect, but she always done awesome at her surprises. She told me to close my eyes and open up my hand. Something light and smooth was placed in my hands and she told me that I could open my eyes.
And what a sight to see!! Two little pink lines. We were going to be blessed with a child!!
Lacey says that my initial facial expression was shock at first, but I would like to say it was more in amazement. To think that God would choose to bless us with this gift!
I was jumping for joy. Words fail me.

About Us

Edmond, Oklahoma, United States
Jeremy and I met in high school. We were members of the same church youth group. One night before youth group it was raining very hard. My mom suggested that I call Jeremy for a ride. I really didn't want to- being a lowly sophomore it wouldn't be very cool to call a senior for a ride. For some reason (most likely because of God's prodding) I called Jeremy. Within the next week we hung out three more times. Then I came down with Mono, but I still had the strength to ask Jeremy to be my date to a Saddie Hawkins dance. Jeremy of course said yes. A few days before the dance Jeremy asked me to date him at Gumby's Pizza after a friend's baptism and wrecking his car. We have been inseparable ever since. After 6 years of dating, Jeremy and I said "I do". The last year and a half has been a whirlwind. Jeremy moved to KC while I finished my nursing degree. I began my nursing career and now Jeremy will be graduating in May. This May also brings more change as we will be moving and starting new jobs in Edmond, Oklahoma. In addition we found out that we are expecting our first child to arrive in December. Follow our blog as God takes us on the wonderful journey of building our family.
